BIOMA — Integrated Bioeconomy Solutions for the Agri-Food Value Chain
BIOMA was a collaborative Research and Technological Development (R&TD) project established to strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of the agri-food value chain.
The project brought together 24 Portuguese organisations, including companies, technology organisations and research institutions, with FoodInTech, now known as Flowtech, participating as a co-promoter. It ran from July 2020 to June 2023.
An integrated approach to the agri-food value chain
BIOMA aimed to promote the adoption of integrated Bioeconomy solutions across different areas of research and development.
The project was structured around five strategic pillars:
- Sustainability — development of a methodology for assessing the sustainability of the agri-food value chain, supported by the digitalisation of critical points;
- Food waste — research into solutions for monitoring food waste in the HoReCa sector and the development of approaches to extend product shelf life;
- Valorisation of by-products and waste — development of methods to recover value from resources generated by agri-food activities, including the extraction of substances with the potential to be used as new functional ingredients;
- Traceability — research and development of a modular traceability solution covering different stages of the value chain, supported by an integrated digital platform;
- Digital ecosystem — development of a platform for demonstrating solutions in real-world environments, following a "Test Before Invest" approach and promoting the Bioeconomy and digital transformation of the agri-food value chain.
From production to consumer
One of the distinguishing features of BIOMA was its comprehensive approach to the agri-food value chain.
In terms of traceability, the project covered different stages:
- Primary production;
- Transport and logistics;
- Processing;
- Retail and food service;
- Consumer.
This approach aimed to create the conditions for greater integration of information throughout the value chain and encourage the adoption of new digital solutions.
Bioeconomy, sustainability and digitalisation
BIOMA brought these three dimensions together within a single project, seeking to develop solutions that would contribute to a more competitive and sustainable agri-food value chain.
Digitalisation played a role in several areas of the project, particularly in sustainability assessment, traceability and the creation of a digital ecosystem for demonstrating new solutions.
